This is a USB Glow igniter that is powered by a provided Lithium-ion power pack.

It's handy to keep in your toolbox as a back up igniter should your main one fail. The power pack can also be used for charging or powering other devices.

The power pack has an LED that tells you if your Glow plug is working correctly and flashes if the Glowplug needs replacing!

AUTO GLOW DRIVER Electronic On AUTO GLOW DRIVER Electronic On-Board Glow Driver By Stan Evans Note the discrete components placed on the single sided PC board. The LED can be removed and placed some place in the model on extended leads to be more visual near the engine compartment. Note the underside of the Glow Driver single sided PC board. The traces are well spaced for simple construction and ease of soldering. General Description Glow plugs have a positive temperature coefficient, that is to say, the hotter they become, the higher the internal resistance.

The glow driver senses the resistance of the glow plug, and can be set to turn on at a desired temperature. When the engine is idling, or running rich, the glow plug cools off, lowering the resistance causing the glow driver to turn on, and when the engine speeds up the resistance increases causing the glow driver to turn off.

The glow driver circuit runs independent of any receiver controls, such as throttle, the only thing required from the receiver is five volts DC. Circuit Description (Refer To Figure 1) When the glow driver is activated, a voltage is sensed from the current through the glow plug and R1.

This voltage is amplified by Op-amp IC2A, the gain is adjusted with R5. Op-amp IC2B is used as a switched inverter. As the input voltage to Op-amp IC2B increases to a predetermined level, set by R5, Op-amp IC2B switches on, providing a reset to timer IC1. The timer IC1 has an internal clock timed by C2, R6, and R10 and various counter stages programmed by pins 12 and 13 to provide a predetermined time delay, in this case the time delay is set for about two seconds. When timer IC1 is reset by Op-amp IC2B the output of the timer pin 8 changes from a logic low to logic hi, turning on mosfet Q1 and fet Q2.

Mosfet Q1 is connected in parallel with R1, when Q1 is turned on, it bypasses R1, supplying full current to the glow plug at the same time Q2 turns on (glow plug on indicator) LED1. Remember the timer is set for about two seconds, after that Q1 is turned off again and the voltage across the glow plug is again sensed.

If the voltage is still low, the cycle starts over again and again until the voltage increases above the set level, then the glow driver turns off until a low voltage is sensed again. The 5vdc required by the glow driver circuit is supplied by the receiver through a cable connected to P1 and a plug that can be plugged into any unused receiver channel. Construction The circuit board is single sided, etched with ferric chloride. There are several types of iron-on transfer materials on the market that use toner from a laser printer or copy machine for etching resist. Follow the instructions with the type of transfer material you use. Once the board is etched and cut to size, drill all the holes.

See Figure 4 for suggested drill sizes. Load the board using Figure 5 to locate the component locations, and carefully solder each component in place.

Clean the board with alcohol or M.E.K. Then solder the interconnect wires to the board.

See Figure 3 for wiring connections. Note: The circuit board in Figure 6 is a mirror image viewed from the solder side of the board. This is to provide the proper view for using a copy machine and iron transfer material. Adjustment 1.

Turn R5 full clockwise, turn on transmitter, receiver, and glow driver. Start the engine. Idle the engine at the rpm that you want the glow driver to turn on. Adjust R5 counterclockwise until LED1 just turns off. Adjust R5 slowly clockwise until LED1 just turns back on again.

Run the engine rpm up and down to check operation of the glow driver, if not satisfied repeat steps 1 through 6 and try again. Note: If you change glow plug heat range, you should re-adjust the glow driver for the new plug. Final Comment This glow driver turns on by the glow plug temperature, not by the position of the throttle like most glow drivers. In some cases the engine could be idling too rich, when the throttle is suddenly advanced most glow drivers will turn off (just when they are needed the most). This glow driver will remain on until the glow plug temperature increases to the preset level. The circuit is very simple (no microcontroller) and makes a good project for the average technician.

I have used this circuit for several years in different aircraft; it has worked well for me. Www.saevans@rcsis.com All Contents Copyright © 2002. R/C Modeler Corporation.
